This book describes my journey of recovery from addiction.
I am an addict. Like all participants in AA counseling sessions and drug rehabilitation programs, I could only begin my recovery by acknowledging my addiction.
What is my curse, my forbidden fruit that tempts me like Adam and Eve, the proverbial apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, sex, shopping...?
No, that's not it! You can't see it or touch it! You can only feel it! Only feel it!
I saved my life after a breakup because I realized that change starts with me. No one else can fill the void inside me, no one can replace my parents, no one can feed my inner child, and no one can give me what I cannot give myself.
No one!
We can convince ourselves that we are balanced, that we feel great in our own company, that we are internally strong, and that nothing can shake our composure. We might also have the impression that we know everything about ourselves and that we are stable. But only when life places another person in our path do we see how much of that is true and how much is merely our perception of ourselves.
